Repaving Daytona... Better Racing or Destroying a Great Thing?

Daytona International Speedway will receive its first repaving in over 30 years later this summer, following the Coke Zero 400 in early July.

Given all the problems with the track in this year's season-opening Daytona 500, repaving couldn't come at a better time... or could it? On the flip-side, any time a track is repaved, it typically takes several races before it "comes in."

So our debate to you is: Repaving Daytona... Progress or Destruction of one more tradition?

  1. Boy... when the powers of NASCAR decide they want to wreck something, they really go full force! Yeah, the bumps were starting to even look a bit ridiculous on tv, but why not grind 'em down and find a high tech 'super sealant' for the track...

Yeah, Talladega's come out pretty well, but I think we have to give that credit to the WING coming back more than anything else... wait... maybe NASCAR does listen once in a while!

  2. Most definitely repaving Daytona would make for better racing, plus less wear and tear on the tires and drivers patience! They can do this after the July 2010 race and have a sellout of the entire seats for the beginning of the 2011 season. NASCAR.....listen to the fans !!!!! We really don't want all these delays just to patch something that should have been done during the off season....

  3. A lot of the drivers seem to like the bumps, I think they like the surge they can actually get off them and it adds some character to each corner, making it not the same ol same ol...when it upsets the car slightly if done right. I think the Dega aving job was excellent work, thank god they gave op on "levigating" the tracks after the charlotte fiasco a few years back.

  4. Like alot of the tracks they have repaved ,it takes a few races for the drivers to get use to the new surface. They will complain and go on and on and of course Junior will cuss it although his voice was loudest to repave it. but in time it will be back to the driving and they wont be able to put the balme on the track.Nascar is going all the way on this one and with today's methods it should last real long this time.it's been needed for years and if they dont do something now the next 500 would most likely be called completely. And Nascar has learned so the process should go along well I personally cant wait to go back again for the 500 with the new surface NO interuptions!

  5. I think it was long overdue mainly for safety reasons. If you ever saw how bumpy the track was, you have to question as to how many wrecks were caused by it. At least now, with a smoother surface, that gets taken out of the equation. I think we'll have some faster races unless they get choked by a smaller restrictor plate to keep NASCAR's insurance rates down.
